The User's Manual (winman50.pdf) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 2. Installing WinSPIRS 5 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Full details of how to install the WinSPIRS 5.0 software are given in Chapter 2 of the WinSPIRS User's Manual (Winman50.pdf), but the following important information is repeated here: Important: ---------- If you install WinSPIRS 5.02 over an existing version of WinSPIRS (WinSPIRS 4.0, 4.01, 5.0, 5.01), WinSPIRS 5.0 will update your winspirs.ini but will retain any options you have set. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3. New Features and Changes in WinSPIRS 5.0 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= * New installer WinSPIRS 5.0 uses the new installer technology introduced into the latest Microsoft operating systems. The following enhancements have been made to the install process: Local language versions can be installed at the same time as the main package. Users can configure which components of the package they want to install, instead of installing the whole package, e.g. Configuration utilities such as ERLedit and/or Reconfig can be deselected if not needed. Users can now select the language of the License to view. New repair and modify modes. * Improved support for Full Text databases WinSPIRS now uses the WinSPIRS 2.1-style display of records and Tables of Content. When downloading Records there is now the possibility of choosing Formatted ASCII Text. This is useful for transferring records to a database, for example. * Configuration Defaults Changed Downloaded drives for records/histories/graphics changed from A,B to 'blank' i.e. no restrictions. Default font for databases changed from Courier-LD to Arial. Default fixed pitch font is still Courier-LD * Improvements to searching WinSPIRS now has the ability to retrieve records with long titles. Using a leading accented char in quotes now works correctly. Ability to retrieve records with adjacent identical terms (e.g. gorilla gorilla). Ability to retrieve single-word journal titles in the TI field by entering a trailing hyphen. Problems with Multi word searches not returning the correct records have been resolved. Using spaces before parenthesis in searches now works correctly. Using the colon character in a search now works correctly. * Library Holdings The behavior varies slightly depending on which vintage server you connect to. When connected to ERL Server 5.x, the show held titles functionality will return all records that have been configured as available by the ERL administrator. By default this is records containing the fields *LHM and/or FTXT, but could be anything the administrator decides. When connected to dbserver 4.11, records are deemed as held if they contain either the *LHM or FTXT fields (not configurable) When using local databases a record is 'held' if it has the *LHM field (FTXT does not exist for local dbs). * WinSPIRS does not offer SGML support * WinSPIRS does not offer SDI Alerts functionality =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 4. Problems Corrected in WinSPIRS 5.0 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- WinSPIRS 5.0 corrects problems that appeared in earlier software versions. * Full support for LinkWizard URLs WinSPIRS no longer crashes when displaying ILINK, WEBLH, ORDER links or links in the WinSPIRS record display that include a long URL. When WinSPIRS 5 connects to ERL Server 5 you can now have document delivery links included in your records. * Library Holdings improvements 'Show held titles only' and large record sets problem has been resolved. Previously, Attempting to show held-titles only with very large result sets (typically larger than 10-15,000 records) caused slow performance or other problems. 'Show held titles' now works when more than one database is loaded. Library holding files can now be placed in a directory other than the WinSPIRS installation directory. * Table of Contents and navigation in full text databases The Table of Contents problem has been resolved. Previously where multiple full text databases were selected, it was only possible to view the table of contents from one database at a time. Where a full text database is split over several CDs this could lead to the table of contents being incomplete. * Problems with networked printers and long printer names have been resolved WinSPIRS did not print correctly to network printers with long names, or those containing characters like '='. * Search History Problems saving search histories under Windows 2000 and XP have been resolved. * Problems in ISO Latin-1 databases problem have been resolved Lateral searching can be carried out in ISO Latin-1 databases, including situations where the search string contains accented characters. An exception to this was lateral searches for terms which begin with an accented letter. This is no longer the case. * 'Guides' are now available for databases on hard disk Previously where databases were being used from hard disk rather than CD, the database specific help ('Guides') were not available in some circumstances. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 5. Problems Corrected in WinSPIRS 5.01 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= * Opening more than 30 database segments no longer produces performance problems and error messages. Previously performance of the limit dialog and/or index browsing degraded if more than 30 ERL mounted segments were opened in one go. * Corrected problem which prevented printing of records on Windows 98 A small number of printers did not work with WinSPIRS running on Windows 98, examples included the HP LaserJet 6L, HP DeskJet 720 and 970cxi * The Modify Maintenance dialog now initialises correctly Doing a 'Modify' from the setup maintenance dialog used to selects all WinSPIRS features regardless of whether they had been installed. It now only checks the ones that are currently installed * Next Hit stability improvements. Using Next hit feature on a full text database mounted on an ERL server occasionally resulted in an abnormal WinSPIRS exit. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 6. Problems Corrected in WinSPIRS 5.02 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= * ERL Connectivity on Microsoft Vista When running WinSPIRS on Microsoft Vista, attempts to contact an ERL server no longer results in an error "Server not responding" * WinSPIRS Help on Microsoft Vista WinSPIRS has been modified to prevent an error message being presented when accessing the application help files. * Warning message when using a Network Installed WinSPIRS from a client PC running Vista The WinSPIRS executable has been given a Digital signature to prevent the user having to verify the publisher of the software each time. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 7. Known Issues in this Release =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= * Selecting multiple items from an index and scrolling When the scrollbar thumb is used to scroll a list of index terms, the top item displayed is selected (highlighted), and any previous selections made are discarded. This problem can be avoided through scrolling by clicking on the scrollbar above or below the thumb, or by using the scrollbar arrows. * Database present both on disk and CD If the same database is installed on hard disk and also located in a CD drive, WinSPIRS will hang and eventually crash. * ErlEdit does not run on Microsoft Vista x64 In order to configure an ERL server, you will need to manually add it to the erlclnt.cfg file =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 7.
