Ovid Online Now Offers Athens Authentication To Users in the U.K. and Ireland

LONDON, U.K., 28th May 2002 - Ovid Technologies, Inc. announces that Athens authentication on Ovid Online is now available to Ovid users in the U.K. and Ireland. In response to customer requests for Athens, Ovid has extended Athens availability to its US based global server, in addition to the NISS Biomed service in the U.K. Now resources such as Journals@Ovid and Books@Ovid can be more easily accessed by the academic and NHS communities in these regions.

"The availability of Athens on our global server will enable Ovid customers to access the most current information via Ovid databases, journals and books, with the proven ease of the Athens system, now a key component of information access and delivery in many organisations. This is the first step in our plans to globalise our Online service," said Andrew Richardson, European General Manager, Ovid Technologies.

About Athens
Athens is an Access Management System that controls access to web-based online subscription services, and provides

secure single username access to multiple online access controlled services
devolved administration facilities at organisation level, to enable an organisation to establish access to their own subscribed online services by whatever hierarchical user account structure they wish
shared access account with IP address checking
personal accounts with no IP address checking, that may be used for off-campus use in general and distance learners in particular
encrypted bulk upload facilities to add Athens usernames from another data source, perhaps the Institution's Registry
scalable services with over 1.6 million accounts
replication facilities at three separate physical locations, thus offering a fully sustainable authentication service

The service is used by all U.K. HE institutions, an increasing number of FE colleges and over half the NHS. Athens is also the name of the division within EduServ that develops the software and supports the Athens service in the U.K. There are now two major national Athens services in operation; one for U.K. education community and another for NHS sector.
