Ovid’s Information Search and Discovery Platforms Now Support Single Sign-On Electronic Information Access for Shibboleth Federations Worldwide

New York, NY (June 12, 2007) – Ovid Technologies, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health and a global leader in electronic medical, scientific, and academic information research solutions, is pleased to announce the launch of Shibboleth-compliant access for both of its precision search and discovery platforms, Ovid Gateway and SilverPlatter WebSPIRS. This release provides single sign-on Ovid and SilverPlatter access to researchers, healthcare professionals, and other end users at institutions that are part of a Shibboleth federation. Ovid has already completed implementation to support Shibboleth authentication for the UK Access Management Federation for Education and Research, which is made up of educational institutions throughout the UK.

Content vendors use a variety of authentication mechanisms to manage access to their products. The security vulnerabilities and variety of these mechanisms make it difficult for a library portal to provide uniform and reliable access to the library's electronic subscriptions. Various institutions can join together in a Shibboleth federation, enabling users to get easy single sign-on access to content resources at institutions within the federation.
