Ovid Expands Publishing Partnership with Primal Pictures to Offer More than 30 Anatomy Modules

Now Available on OvidSP, Dentistry, Human Anatomy: Systemic Edition, and other 3D interactive anatomy offerings from Primal Pictures

New York, NY (April 27, 2009) – Ovid, part of Wolters Kluwer Health, and a global leader in the development and delivery of customizable electronic research information for the medical, healthcare and academic markets, is pleased to announce that it is adding new modules to its suite of 3D interactive human anatomy offerings from Primal Pictures.  Human Anatomy: Systemic Edition, 3D Head & Neck Anatomy for Dentistry, and a Spanish-language version of Essential Regional Anatomy are now available via OvidSP, Ovid’s industry-leading precision search and discovery platform. Cost-effective packages of multiple modules are also now available to Ovid’s global customer base.

“Primal Pictures is one of the world’s leading producers of multimedia products for the study and teaching of human anatomy, and we are thrilled with the way it has continued to leap ahead of other market players with innovations in instructional 3-D anatomy content,” said Andrew L. Popper, Vice President of Global Products. “We have consistently reviewed some of the very best offerings in the market. When the team at Primal Pictures showed us their vision for the new nursing, allied health, and dental modules, we were wowed not only by the technology, but, more importantly, how they tested the products in the medical and academic community to ensure that they were well-targeted and highly instructive for, and easily retained by students and professionals in the healthcare space. Since the images are not simply medical illustrations or artistic impressions, users will find the sophisticated animation and interactivity extremely helpful in their work—whether they’re involved in clinical practice, teaching, or education.”

Targeted to institutions such as nursing schools and allied health programs that teach human anatomy as a series of bodily systems, Human Anatomy: Systemic Edition consists of 15 distinct modules, such as Skeletal System, Muscular System, Cardiovascular System, and more. Combined, they include more than 300 anatomical views and 4,000 anatomical structures supplemented by descriptive text, a study guide, and quiz section.

Designed for dentists in training or practice, 3D Head & Neck Anatomy for Dentistry is authored by leading specialists in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery and includes more than 100 three-dimensional views of the head, neck, face, oral and nasal cavities, dentition, individual teeth in 3D and cross section, nerves, larynx and pharynx, sinuses, eye, brain and more. Users can click on any structure to view related text, as well as dissections, clinical slides, annotated illustrations, video clips, and functional anatomy animations you can rotate and add/ remove layers.

Fundamentos de Anatomia Humana en 3D (Essential Regional Anatomy) takes a regional approach to the study and teaching of anatomy: 9 views focus on a specific body region, such as head & neck, shoulder, spine, and knee. Similar to the English and French versions of this product, users can strip away layers of bone, muscle, and ligaments, and rotate anatomy models on screen.

Ovid now offers more than 30 modules featuring more than 6,500 accurate 3D anatomy modeled structures as part of its Primal Pictures suite of product offerings. Others include Human Anatomy: Regional Edition; Interactive Functional Anatomy; Essential Regional Anatomy (also available in French); 3D Head & Neck with Basic Neuroanatomy, a double FREDDIE (International Health & Medical Media Awards) award winner in 2008 ; 6 modules geared to specialists and professionals in chiropractic, acupuncture, and Pilates; and more. New cost-effective packages consisting of one or more modules are also available to assist librarians, information managers, and other purchasing decision makers in choosing a specific set of modules for their institution.

Created by a team of expert anatomists and graphic artists who interpret actual medical scan and dissection data, and then construct images using advanced imaging techniques, all modules are designed to graphically illustrate structural anatomical relationships, functions, and biomechanics, and deliver a variety of features and interactive functionality. Depending on the module, users can rotate anatomical models as much as 360 degrees and strip away different layers of each anatomical region or organ.  Assessment and treatment videos, MRI slices, pathology slides, and clinical descriptions may also be included.
