A unique source of information for Health Management Policy

This Health Management and Policy Database, from The Healthcare Management Information Consortium (HMIC), is an invaluable source of information for health care administrators and managers. This unique product is updated bi-monthly and contains essential information from two key institutions: the Library & Information Services of the Department of Health, England and the King's Fund Information & Library Service. It is indexed using the DH-Data thesaurus, a controlled vocabulary of over 17,000 subject keywords.

The Department of Health database reflects the business of the Department of Health (DH) and its Agencies and includes all DH publications including circulars and press releases. Core subjects include health service management and administration, with an emphasis on the British National Health Service, including policy, planning and finance; design, construction and maintenance of health service buildings; medical equipment and supplies; medicines safety; public health, nursing and primary care; mental health; environmental health; social policy; and social services for families, people with disabilities and older people. Some international comparisons and statistics are also covered.

The King's Fund is an independent health charity that works to develop and improve management of health and social care services; its database includes reports and articles about service improvements in these areas, as well as up-to-date government guidance and policy. The database is particularly strong in 'grey' (informally published) literature, on topics such as health and community care management and organizational development, inequalities in health, user involvement, and race and health.

The SilverPlatter product includes the former HELMIS database, from the Nuffield Institute for Health (based at the University of Leeds) holds over 54,000 records relating to health systems in the UK, Europe and developing countries. This is an archival database, which is no longer added to.
