Annals of Botany is an international plant science journal with editorial offices in Australia, Japan, UK and USA. It is published monthly in both electronic and printed forms with at least one extra issue each year that focuses on a particular theme in plant biology. The journal is managed by the Annals of Botany Company, a not for profit educational charity established to promote plant science worldwide.
The Journal publishes full-length research papers, short communications, review articles and book reviews. It also publishes 'Botanical Briefings'. These are short commissioned reviews that appear in both printed and electronic forms and that are accessible electronically free of charge. All papers in each issue are summarized briefly in Content Snapshots and a selection is reviewed in more detail in Content Select. Back issues from 1993 may be searched from the web site. A rigorous review process ensures that readers are exposed to genuine and novel advances across a wide spectrum of botanical knowledge.
Annals of Botany welcomes papers in all areas of plant science. These include those applying molecular, analytical, mathematical and statistical techniques to examine topical questions at any level of biological organization ranging from cell to community, from tissue culture to crop production, and from microclimate to ecosystem. Its scope extends to all flowering and non-flowering taxa, and to taxonomic and evolutionary questions particularly when these are addressed using molecular tools.
Annals of Botany does not levy page charges, provides electronic reprints or 100 hard copy reprints of each article free of charge, supplies a complimentary printed copy of the issue to each corresponding author and makes no charge for colour plates where these carry useful information or enhance clarity.
The reviewing process is highly demanding, leading to a rejection rate that is approximately 56 % and rising. Manuscript evaluation time is typically 4 weeks. Upon acceptance, papers are listed electronically, under AOBFirstAlert, with full text pdfs posted electronically, under AOBPreview, up to 6 weeks ahead of final publication. The minimum publication time from submission to final publication is currently 5 - 6 months.
The Journal has an impact factor of 1.274 and is ranked 42/137 in the Plant Sciences category of the ISI Journal Citation Reports (2000).
