Descriptions may include, the journal's Usage Statement, Information for contributors, conditions of acceptance, style sheets, and other pertinent information. Aggregation All Ovid Full Text - hundreds of journals from dozens of different publishers - is loaded in the same 100% searchable SGML format, and is accessible under a single interface. Ask-a-Librarian Allows users to send questions by means of email to a designated professional searcher at your institution, which provides another way to communicate with users. The feature can also be tailored by group within a site. AutoAlerts By using AutoAlerts a user can save a search strategy (no matter how simple or complex), and have new search results from subsequent database updates emailed to themselves automatically. Versions for AutoAlerts users: HTM | .DOC Autologin Allows login to the Ovid system without prompting for a user ID, simplifying both administration and user access. Back to Top C Citation Manager Allows the user to select specific citations in a search result set for printing, displaying on-screen, saving, and emailing. Options for each function-such as field selection, different output formats, two sort keys, and more-provide a high degree of flexibility. Combine Sets Working with sets of search results in a search history, the user can access menu-driven and command-line Boolean operations such as AND, OR, and NOT. Back to Top E Email Jumpstart Ovid Web Gateway users can take advantage of our enhanced jumpstart tool that enables them to create shortcuts into the Ovid Web interface, such connecting directly to a Full Text article, TOC or Issue List, executing a saved search, and more. You must request to have this feature implemented—contact support@ovid to have this feature turned on for your institution. Jumpstarts: HTM Get FAQs: HTM E-mail Options Allow users to e-mail their search results and/or search strategies to any e-mail account or multiple accounts. Users can keep copies of work for later use, and easily share search results with others. Expert Searches Give site administrators the ability to make available search strategies that focus specifically upon a particular research topic or that increase distribution options for complex search strategies. Versions for Expert Searches users: HTM | .DOC Back to Top F Full Text Manager Allows the user to customize how an Ovid Full Text document displays, saves to disk or e-mails. The user can specify options for handling graphics in the document, and choose between ASCII and HTML formats for saving and emailing. Back to Top G Group Settings Options can be set for different user groups at a site for each database, such as "Default to Basic Mode," "set Mapping on/off," "enable Ask-a-Librarian", and many others. This provides administrators maximum customizability and flexibility with a minimum amount of time and effort, to tailor Ovid to the unique needs of the site. Back to Top H Help System Provides well-indexed, printable hypertext information for the user on how to use every Ovid software feature. Back to Top J JCODES and Local Messages Allows the site to select one or more Ovid databases and mark individual journals as "local" to the library's collection. A customizable local holdings message appears whenever bibliographic citations to those journals are printed or displayed. The custom message need not be holdings-related: using this capability, the system administrator can broadcast news about updates, new features, local journal selection, and anything else users should know about. Journal Browsing Makes browsing an Ovid full text electronic journal is as easy as turning pages. Users can move from the table of contents to an article, from one article to the next, and from one issue to another. Users can also browse the journal list by subject or by journal name. Jumpstart Use this feature to define links from your institution's Web pages to virtually any point within an Ovid session. Jumpstart streamlines user access to Ovid by automating routine processes like log-in, retrieval of a specific document, running a pre-specified search, and much more. Jumpstarts: HTM Back to Top L License Bypass Guarantees (when enabled) access to Ovid for specified priority or VIP user(s). Priority users are guaranteed access to Ovid even if all licenses are in use. Licensing Administrators can allocate user access to Ovid by pre-determined factors such as Ovid software application used (Ovid Web Gateway), user-group, or database. This gives the administrator the flexibility to scale access according to the specific needs and priorities at the institution. Limit to Local Holdings Limits search results in an Ovid citation database to publications which are physically held in the library. Requires set-up of a separate JCODES holdings list. Limits Built-in ways to refine searches by restricting retrieval of records by a specific criterion, such as type of document, population, subject classification, etc. Ovid anticipates users' needs by customizing commonly-used search limits to the precise needs and capabilities of each database. When necessary, Ovid designs limits to compensate for changes in data structure over the history of a database, allowing seamless retrieval over an extended time span. Links@Ovid Links@Ovid is a basic yet robust, feature-rich bibliographic centered linking solution that provides powerful outbound full text linking functionality. With Links@Ovid, users will enjoy linking from Ovid’s 100+ bibliographic databases to electronic full text, as well as to locally-held print resources through institutional OPACs and document delivery services. Using Links@Ovid, end users can link from Ovid to a greatly expanded list of full text content that includes titles from both publishers and content aggregators. Key features of Links@Ovid include: more accurate linking, ability to limit results to full text available, integrated import utility for administrators, new administrative tool available directly from the Ovid Web Gateway interface, and direct linking from Journals@Ovid. LinkSolver Ovid LinkSolverTM, Ovid's comprehensive resource linking solution, expands the power of linking to a wide variety of Internet resources. Ovid LinkSolverTM is easy to set up, administer, and use through a centralized link administration interface. Site administrators define, organize, and display links based on their library’s resources and their patrons’ workflow. Thus, while site administrators define the scope of their electronic library, end users enjoy navigation to a world of relevant resources. The result is simple: one-click access to a range of valuable resources. Now, a single link from a search query is the key to a wealth of relevant information—all yours to explore through the power of Ovid LinkSolverTM. Key end user features of Ovid LinkSolverTM include:

Log Files Ovid applications generate log files that provide useful, mineable data on software use, errors, and more. Log files can be used to help debug a system and track database & license usage. Back to Top M Mapping Mapping, or "Vocabulary Mapping", enables searching with natural language terminology. Mapping greatly improves retrieval precision in complex databases that have a thesaurus or tree structure. If the user decides not to use any of the suggested terms, a single click searches the original query verbatim. Multifile and Deduping Allows the user to create searches that query several Ovid databases simultaneously, and then purge duplicate records from the search results. Duplicate removal options can be customized to ensure that only preferred duplicates are retained. Versions for VT100 Multifile/Deduping users: HTM | .DOC | .TXT. Versions for Ovid Web Gateway Multifile/Deduping users: HTM | .DOC | .TXT Back to Top N Navigation Options Ovid's 100% SGML Full Text allows a variety of powerful navigation options that are unavailable in page-image full text formats such as PDF. Each Ovid Full Text article has an outline consisting of anchor links that take the user to particular points in an article. Context links in references take the user to the exact place in the article where the reference is used. Structured abstracts are also available. News Page Provides an efficient way for system administrators and library officials to update and inform users about new databases, library policies, downtimes, or other pertinent information. Content is completely at the site's discretion. The News Page appears on-screen immediately after the user logs in to Ovid. Back to Top O Online JCODES Online JCODES allows administrators to provide site-specific messages regarding which journals are owned in their local collections. The customized messages will appear in both the Titles and the Citations Displays. Until now, sites have been able to include Local Holdings Messages online, but the limit to local holdings was not available. Now users can limit search results to those journals held in their local institution's collection. Searchers can then easily print this filtered set and use it as a reference in locating original source materials on site. OvidStat An add-on reporting utility to Ovid's search software that tracks account, license and database usage. OvidStat allows sites to generate the reports necessary to optimally plan, deploy and allocate Ovid information resources. Back to Top P Personal Account The Personal Account feature enables users to create and maintain Saved Searches and AutoAlerts in a secure and private workspace. Users specify their own Account Name and Password during their first Personal Account session, therefore keeping personal information secure. Then, users can modify personal information at any time. With Ovid as your end-user search engine, your users will be able to access your proprietary database under the same state-of-the-art, intuitive Ovid interface. Publish Ahead of Print (PAP) Full Text. Journals@Ovid's Publish Ahead of Print (PAP) Full Text provides you with online access to critical content before it is published in a printed journal issue. PAP Full Text is made available in select journals from publishers who participate with Ovid's Publish Ahead of Print program. All PAP content has been peer-reviewed and accepted for publishing. For more information, click here. Back to Top R Recovery Enables users to recover search sessions that time out or end unexpectedly. If recovery is enabled, Ovid allows the interrupted search strategy to be recovered intact so that the user can resume searching without losing any work. Reference Linking References in Ovid Full Text articles contain links to article citations in Ovid bibliographic databases and other Ovid Full Text journal articles. Target databases of reference links are clearly labeled. Back to Top S Save Options Ovid provides several options for saving search results and search strategies. With these options, users can conveniently save their work and keep track of their results, establish permanent or temporary search strategies and be automatically notified when new information matches their search criteria, and save citations in several different formats. Search Fields Option Allows the user to select a specific field or fields within a database for searching. Search History Ovid retains the result sets from all searches performed during a user's search session, allowing re-viewing of search results, and Boolean manipulation of sets of previously retrieved documents using Ovid's Combine Sets feature. The user may also save sets to be re-executed in a future search session. Search Modes, Advanced Mode Ovid's default "Advanced" search mode provides pinpoint accuracy in information retrieval, including one-click access to frequently used functions, sophisticated tools, and personalized options. Search Modes, Basic Mode A simplified "Basic" or "Easy" search mode for novice searchers is accessible with a single keystroke and supports queries on subjects and author names with simple limits. Search Modes, Command-line Mode For professional searchers familiar with Ovid's Native Mode (BRS) interface, the timesaving Command-line (or "Dot-Dot") Ovid search syntax is available in all Ovid interfaces. In unqualified searches, each result set displays with the exact 2-letter codes for the fields that were queried. Secure Server (SSL) Ovid Web Gateway online users can search Ovid databases using the same security protocol that banks use to transfer funds, and other commercial organizations use to conduct electronic commerce. Secure Socket Layer (SSL) provides data encryption, server authentication, and message integrity for a TCP/IP connection. Shared Accounts More than one user can share an account ID. This reduces account administration and can provide tighter control over access. Simultaneous On-screen Support Users have easy access to information about how to use every database access point, index, limit, and output field. Information is database-specific, and is displayed in the same window in which the user is being asked to make a choice. This reduces the need for the user to query the help system in a separate step. Single Interface for Journals and Databases Ovid customers can access both databases and full text journals using the same award-winning, feature-rich Ovid Web Gateway interface. This means less user training and a seamless, efficient search and retrieval experience that is unavailable on platforms that use different interfaces for each. Single Purchase Ovid has already negotiated licenses with all participating publishers, so all you need for Databases@Ovid, Books@Ovid, and Journals@Ovid is one contract with Ovid--rather than several from each publisher/vendor. Single Set of Usage Statistics All Ovid customers have access to a powerful statistics program to track usage data for all the Ovid databases, full text journals, and other resources to which they have subscribed. Back to Top T Table of Contents Display A powerful full text navigation feature, the Table of Contents Display contains all the information in the printed, published equivalent (including page numbers), with enhancements such as checkbox selection of articles and the ability to link directly to the abstract, the complete reference, or the Full Text of each item. Table of Contents Link Every Ovid Full Text article display contains a "Table of Contents" button that provides one-click access to the complete table of contents for the journal issue that features the article being viewed. Thesaurus and Tree Display Allows both professional and casual users to query the controlled vocabulary and classification codes of many Ovid databases directly, in a graphical environment that shows the relationships between broader and narrower terms, displays complete scope notes and posting information, and provides numerous navigational tools to explore related concepts. Timeout Administrators can specify a period of inactivity after which the Ovid system will automatically close a session. Timing out inactive sessions frees up idle licenses left running by users who forget to log off. Training Mode Systems administrators can conduct training sessions without exhausting their available Ovid licenses. Training sessions will not disrupt normal Ovid user sessions. Back to Top V Validation, Custom User access to an Ovid system can be set-up for specific terminals or for wide-area access across a specified network, using a script to validate users in a variety of ways. Validation, IP Enables users of a specified network (or IP address) to log in to Ovid without entering a user ID or password. Validation, System With System Validation, users gain access to the Ovid system through a specific user ID and password assigned by the administrator. This permits detailed tracking of access by user and user group. Back to Top Z Z39.50 Compliance Full compliance of all Ovid databases and interfaces with the ANSI/NISO Z39.50 electronic information retrieval standard allows institutions to integrate Ovid with other compliant information resources. You can link Ovid search results to holdings information contained in your compatible OPAC database, add your own text databases and search them using Ovid software and interfaces, and access Ovid databases from third party Z39.50 compliant tools (such as Endnote).
