Universal Search results are displayed separately from the OvidSP search results. You can view and manage Universal Search results via one of two tab views:
- Combined Tab View – which displays all Ovid Universal Search results from all sources in one tab
- Multiple Tab View – which displays sources in individual tabs
The Combined and Multiple Tab Views operate independently of one another. Sorting, selecting and results management only apply to the currently selected view.

COMBINED TAB VIEW
The Combined Tab View is the default display of Ovid Universal Search results. All Universal Search results are integrated and presented in a single tab.

Source filtering options are available for each source that has results in the Combined Tab View. |
| To change from the Combined Tab View to the Multiple Tab View, click on the Separate Tabs by Source link. |
Each view functions independently, and selections are not migrated between views. Any selections you make in one view will not replicate in another view. |
MULTIPLE TAB VIEW
Ovid Universal Search results are displayed individually by source providers. Results from each source are displayed in an individual tab.

If more than one (1) source exists for a Source Provider, all sources are displayed in the Search Aid box in alphabetical order showing the individual source names with the number of search results for each.
The total number of available results per Source Provider is displayed on the corresponding tab beside the Source Provider name.
| When there is only one source per Source Provider, the source will be displayed in the Search Aid box for informational purposes, but will not be selectable. |

To change from the Multiple Tab View to the Combined Tab View, click on the Combine Tabs link. |

Search Terms Used |
Lists the terms that were used to search each source.
Results Available |
Depending on the search, there may be thousands of records available from each source. This number provides an estimate of the total number of results available. For the best performance however, OvidSP retrieves only a subset of results from each source.
Results Retrieved |
Identifies the actual number of results that were retrieved out of all the available results.
Filter By Source |
Displays an alphabetical list of every source searched for the selected tab.
FILTER UNIVERSAL SEARCH RESULTS
Sources with one (1) or more retrieved records associated with them will be linkable as available active filters.
![]() |
|
Sources under the Filter By Source in the Search Aid box are displayed with different color schemes. Gray. Non-clickable or non-linkable sources with zero (0) search result. Blue. Sources with linkable records associated with them. Black. Indicates the current source being viewed. |
Successful requests will list the number of results retrieved for each source.

|
Click on a source name to limit displayed records to the source platform. Select All Sources to return to the original view of all results for all sources. |
DE-DUPLICATION OF UNIVERSAL SEARCH RESULTS
The same record may be retrieved from more than one source and appear multiple times in a results set. OvidSP's deduplication feature allows you to hide duplicate records, and to view only the unique set.
OvidSP's de-duplication feature will identify and group duplicate records. Only the first or master record will be displayed in the results set. The presence of duplicate records is indicated by the + sign, and by multiple platforms listed on the master record.
The source for the record that is currently being viewed will be listed first, and will be bolded. Duplicate sources will be listed after.

To view duplicate records, click the + sign. Duplicate records will be displayed and indented under the master record to clearly identify their relationship.

To hide duplicate records, click the - sign.
|
Since OvidSP retrieves only a subset of all available results, you may request that more results be retrieved after you have finished viewing the initial set of results.
Select the Get More link to retrieve more results.

When more results are retrieved, they will be appended to previously retrieved results, and the first new result will be displayed.
