The AGRICOLA (Agricultural Online Access) database contains bibliographic records of materials acquired by the National Agricultural Library (NAL) and cooperating institutions in the agricultural and related sciences. Ninety percent of the records describe journal articles and book chapters, and the remaining ten percent describe monographs, series, microforms, audiovisuals, maps, and other types of materials. Together they provide worldwide coverage of the agricultural literature.
Pre-1979 AGRICOLA records are derived from the CAIN format; from 1979 on, MARC-formatted records are used to create the database.

|
| AL | NAL Location |
The AL field contains either a National Agricultural Library (NAL) call number or an NAL classification number. Search NAL Locations only as hyphenated, "bound" phrases. Replace spaces with hyphens and omit all decimal points. Use the truncation symbol (*) to search only part of a number or to retrieve all records within a call number range. Use near in your search statement to combine a call number with an agency code, e.g. near al to limit to NAL's numbers only, or near DLC to limit to LCs. |

| AN | Accession Number |
The AN contains a unique 11 character alphanumeric identifier assigned by the National Agricultural Library. |
|

|
| AU | Author |
Authors' names are hyphenated and appear last name first. The most efficient way to search for an author's name is as a hyphenated, "bound" phrase, excluding dates and qualifiers. For the exact form of name and possible variations, consult the Index. |
|
| Go: Back to Fields |
|
| AUI | Browsable Author Index |
As an alternative to searching with the field label, browse available author names and search for them directly from the Browsable Author Index This field-specific Index contains only author names drawn from the AU field. Names are listed in alphabetical order and display in the exact format as they are indexed in the database. This is especially helpful if you do not know the format of an author's name. This is the most efficient way to search for author names as you can browse for a name and search for it directly from this index. |

If you do not know the exact form of a Subject Heading, consult the Index. Pre-1979 records contain Identifiers only, not Subject Headings; use the Identifiers (ID) field for subject searching. |

| URL | URL |
The URL field contains the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) where an online version of the document, a full-text version of the document, or additional information such as journals can be located. This field also indicates the method of access, such as: http, ftp, email, remote login, etc. This field is useful in limiting your search to only those records
that contain URLs. For example, if you are interested in agricultural
laws, but want to retrieve only those records that provide URLs, conduct
the following search: Similarly, if you wanted only those records that contain http addresses: |

| XURL | URLS ETC |
The XURL field is supposed to help users retrieve records with certain features, e.g. all records that include URL’s, all records that contain email addresses, etc. Use the Authority List of terms to decide which terms to include in the field; this field will be used when cross-database searching, so it's important to use controlled vocabulary. |

The limit fields listed below are specially indexed fields that have relatively few possible values. They allow you to limit your searches to records of a particular characteristic, such as type of document or publication frequency.
Category Codes (CC)
Language (LA)
Language of Summaries (LS)
Publication Type (PT)
Publication Year (PY)
Update Code (UD)
URLS ETC (XURL)
You can search these fields with in or =. For example, to retrieve documents published in German, enter:
german in la or la=german
In addition to in and =, the following operators may be used with numeric limit fields:
| Symbol | Operation Performed | Example |
< |
less than | py<1990 |
> |
greater than | py>1991 |
<= |
less than or equal to | py<=1989 |
>= |
greater than or equal to | py>=1992 |
- |
within a range | py=1990-1992 |

Below are several examples of the types of searches you can use to retrieve information from the AGRICOLA database.
Searching Using Descriptors and Identifiers
Searching Using the Index (including author field)
Searching Using Truncation
Go: Guide Index or Back
Authors' names appear in the Author (AU) field and are hyphenated with the last name first. The best way to search for an author is by selecting the name from the Index. For example, let's look for articles by J. R. Abernathy.
1. First look up Abernathy in the Index.
2. Select Abernathy-JR and then start the search.

Descriptors
Descriptors, found in the Descriptors (DE) field, have been assigned to most of the records in the AGRICOLA database beginning in 1985. Descriptors are from two controlled vocabularies, either the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) or the CAB Thesaurus, published by CAB International. Some records contain both types of Descriptors and a small number of records contain neither.
Descriptors are usually subject terms, but they may also be personal, corporate, or place names. From 1979 to 1985, only monograph or serial title records contain Descriptors; before 1979, no records contain Descriptors. The majority of the database, therefore, contains only Identifiers.
To narrow a search, use the most specific subject term for the concept. Check LCSH and the CAB Thesaurus for specific terms. Both vocabularies provide related terms, narrower and broader in scope. To expand a search, use related or broader terms.
Identifiers
Identifiers, found in the Identifiers (ID) field, are subject
terms for which no controlled vocabulary exists. Since Identifiers have been used consistently in the database (unlike Descriptors), searching with Identifiers will give you comprehensive results.
How to Search
Descriptors and Identifiers have been hyphenated to make searching more efficient. The most efficient way to search a multi-word Descriptor or Identifier is as a hyphenated, "bound" phrase, such as calcium-binding-protein in de. The search calcium in de retrieves all records with Descriptors containing the word calcium, for example, calcium-binding-protein, calcium-hydroxide, etc. To limit a search to the single-word Descriptor term calcium, search for calcium- in de.
Search Identifiers as you would Descriptors, with hyphenated, "bound" phrases or by keywords. For example, citrus-fruit in id limits the search to records containing the phrase in the ID field.
Go: Guide Index or Back
Searching with truncation lets you retrieve records containing variations of your term. For example, let's search for the effects of irradiation on either food storage or food quality.
1. Search for food storage or quality:
food storage or quality
2. Combine the results with a search for irradiat*:
and irradiat*

Most records in AGRICOLA contain Subject Category Codes (CC). NAL has assigned two types of codes: numeric (1979 and earlier) and alphanumeric (since 1980).
Check the AGRICOLA Subject Category Codes with Scope Notes for various types of Subject Category Codes searchable in AGRICOLA. It may be necessary to use several category codes in a search to cover all aspects of a subject. For example, crops are covered by field crops (f120 in cc or 4050 in cc), horticultural crops (f110 in cc or 4055 in cc), miscellaneous crops (f140 in cc or 4060 in cc) and forest trees as crop (k100 in cc or 3515 in cc).

Beginning a search statement with an operator (and, not, or, with, near, or in) combines that statement with the previous one.
For instance, if the search you just completed is radio, searching for and telephone will give you the same results as if you search for radio and telephone. Similarly, the search red cross followed by the search in ti is the same as red cross in ti.
| Operator: | Example: | How it works: |
| OR | radio or telephone | Retrieves records that contain either "radio," "telephone," or both. |
| AND | radio and telephone | Retrieves records that contain both "radio" and "telephone." |
| NOT | radio not telephone | Retrieves records that contain "radio" and excludes those containing "telephone." |
| WITH | red with cross | Retrieves records that contain both "red" and "cross" in the same field. |
| NEAR | radio near telephone | Retrieves records that contain both "radio" and "telephone" in the same sentence. |
| IN | red cross in ti | Retrieves records that contain "red cross " in the Title (TI) field. |
