The LA field contains the languages in which the source document was published, followed by a two-character language abbreviation in parentheses. A record may contain up to 11 languages. The term "Non-English" is also included in this field for documents published in any language other than English.

To search by the language in which the abstract was published, use the Summary Language (LS) field.

Note: This field is available in data added to the database from 1978 onward.

Browsing Language Names

As an alternative to searching with the field label, you can browse language names and search for them directly from the Language Field-Specific Index. This field-specific index contains only language names drawn from the LA field, therefore, your search will always yield results. Search results display in the LA field.
