Label Field Name
AA Additional Author(s)
kingston-d-g in aa
montforts-* in aa

The Additional Author field is used to record authors mentioned in the abstract, such as authors of individual book chapters and presenters of individual conference papers.

Names must be searched either as bound phrases, including the last name, hyphen and initials, or as truncated searches using the last name alone. Searching the last name alone, without the truncation symbol (*), does not retrieve all occurrences of authors with that name. The easiest way to search is to select the name or names from the Index.

Honorary titles are retained but academic titles are not. Additions such as Jr. or III are retained after the initials.

Browsing Author Names
As an alternative to searching with the field label, you can browse names and search for them directly from the Browsable Author Index Field-Specific Index. This field-specific index contains names drawn from the AA field, as well as the Authors, Corporate Authors, and Editors fields; therefore, your search will always yield results. Search results display in the individual fields.

AB  Abstract
cattle in ab

The AB field contains a summary of the document, always in English.

Go: Back to Fields or Back

AD Address of Author
london in ad

The AD field contains the organization and address where the work was done, not the author's present address if he or she has moved. If more than one organization was involved in the work, that of the first named author will be given. The basic form is Name of Institution, Town, Country. Abbreviations and acronyms are often used in this field, so allow for all variations.

AT Additional Title Data
recent advances in at
special issue: brucellosis in at

The AT field contains any title data that is not appropriate in any of the other title fields, for example series statements for books and the titles of special issues of a journal and details of alternative series in which the item is also published.

In some older records, this information can appear in the Supplementary Information (MS) field.

The AT field is included in the free text index.

Use the Every Title (ET) to search simutaneously in the AT, Original Title (OT), and Title (TI) fields.

Go: Back to Fields or Back

AU Author(s)
keane-* in au
keane-m-g in au
kennedy-j-e in au

The AU field lists the name(s) of all personal authors of the original document. Names appear last name first and given names are reduced to initials.

Names must be searched either as bound phrases, including the last name, hyphen, and initials, or as truncated searches using the last name alone. Searching the last name alone, without the truncation symbol (*), does not retrieve all occurrences of authors with that name. The easiest way to search is to select the name or names from the Index.

Honorary titles are retained but academic titles are not. Additions such as Jr. or III are retained after the initials.

Variations of the author's name are usually given at the end of the author field.

The AU field is also included in the Citation (CITN) option.

Browsing Author Names
As an alternative to searching with the field label, you can browse names and search for them directly from the Browsable Author Index Field-Specific Index. This field-specific index contains names drawn from the AU field, as well as the Additional Authors, Corporate Authors, and Editors fields, therefore, your search will always yield results. Search results display in the individual fields.

BT Broad Terms
plants in bt

The BT field contains all the broader hierarchical terms from the CAB Thesaurus which have been automatically generated from the specific terms in the Organism Descriptors (OD) field and the Geographic Headings (GE) field. All entries in the OD and GE fields are assigned all relevant broad terms in the hierarchy of the Thesaurus, including those at the broadest level. These broad terms are entered in the BT field. See Assigning Broader Categories.

Please note that data prior to 1994 have been computer generated so some care should be taken as some records may not have their full complement of broad terms.

CA Corporate Author(s)
who in ca
world health organization in ca

The CA field contains the name of the issuing organization(s) of a paper if there was no personal author named in the Author (AU) field. Organization names are entered in full or as acronyms and all variations should be searched. Variations of corporate names are given at the end of the CA field. The CA field is also included in the Citation (CITN) option.

Browsing Author Names
As an alternative to searching with the field label, you can browse names and search for them directly from the Browsable Author Index Field-Specific Index. This field-specific index contains names drawn from the CA field, as well as the Additional Authors, Authors, and Editors fields, therefore, your search will always yield results. Search results display in the individual fields.

CC CABICODES
ll200 in cc
ll2* in cc

The CC field contains alphanumeric descriptors. These are subject classification codes which indicate the main subject areas covered by the record. These are in the format LL100, where the initial double letter corresponds to a broad subject area, such as animal science, and the three digit number to a subsection of that subject area. Each subsection may be further subdivided to a more specific level.

Truncation may be used to retrieve all records on a particular broad subject area. For example, searching LL* in the CC field retrieves all records on aspects of animal science: apiculture; sericulture; other invertebrate culture; laboratory animal science; etc. Related subjects may be indexed under different category codes.

For greater accuracy, use a combination of CABICODES and descriptors. Text corresponding to the codes is found in the CABICODE Headings (Translations) (CD) field.

See CABICODES for a list of the codes and their corresponding headings.

Go: Back to Fields or Back

CD CABICODE Headings (Translations)
animal-husbandry-general in cd
animal-* in cd
(natural- near general) in cd
"natural- general" in cd

The CD field contains the text equivalent of the alphanumeric codes in the CABICODES (CC) field. For example, for CABICODE LL110 is Dairy Animals.

The headings may be searched in full or truncated. For example, searching animal* in the CD field retrieves most records on aspects of animal husbandry; animal breeding and genetics; zoo animals; and also residues and contamination of animal products, etc.

When searching for a CABICODE Heading which contains a bracket, such as the heading Agriculture (General), please note that the heading term in brackets is indexed separately from the rest of the term and therefore has two, or more, separate entries in the index. Agriculture (General) may be searched either by: (agriculture general) in cd or "agriculture general" in cd. When searching for headings such as Natural Resources (General), you may search this abbreviated as (natural- near general) in cd or "natural- general" in cd - both retrieve natural in the same field as general. Alternatively search for the full heading as (natural resources general) in cd or "natural resources general" in cd.

For headings which contain a stopword, such as Policy and Planning (General), leave the stopword out of your search string as (policy planning general) in cd or "policy planning general" in cd, or include it in quotation marks as (policy "and" planning general) in cd.

See Hyphenated Descriptors for more information on using hyphens.

Please note that due to variations in the headings, searching for a truncated term in the CD field may be less specific than desired. For greater accuracy, use a combination of CABICODE Headings and descriptors.

See CABICODES for a list of the CABICODE Headings and their corresponding codes.

Browsing CABICODE Headings
As an alternative to searching with the field label, you can browse headings for them directly from the CABICODE Headings Field-Specific Index. This field-specific index contains terms drawn from the CD field, so your search will always yield results. Search results display in the individual fields.

ID Identifiers
caulerpa in id

The ID field contains indexing terms which are not currently in the CAB Thesaurus. Where appropriate, non-thesaurus terms are added to the records to provide further indexing. Entries in the ID field are not assigned broad category terms in the Broad Terms (BT) field.

The ID field also contains new terms, for example names of new species, which are not yet in the CAB Thesaurus. For organisms, a broader related term which is in the CAB Thesaurus will be entered in the Organism Descriptors (OD) field so as to generate the required broad terms for the BT field.

Please note that although the ID field contains non-thesaurus terms, older records may have been indexed before some of their indexing terms became incorporated in the Thesaurus. Therefore, older records may contain terms in their ID fields which are now controlled Thesaurus terms. Allow for this in your search strategy.

CABICODES

CABICODES are broad classification codes used to identify the main topics covered by an item in the database.

The following is the complete list of CABICODES for the CAB ABSTRACTS and Global Health databases. The codes are searchable in the CABICODES (CC) field and equivalent text for codes is searchable in the CABICODE Headings (Translations) (CD) field.

Use these fields to limit your search to records dealing with a main subject area or subsection. For greater accuracy, use a combination of CABICODES, or headings, and descriptors.

To search the CC or CD fields, simply enter the field label and code(s) or heading(s). Truncation may be used to retrieve all records on a particular broad subject area. However, when truncating codes, note that related subjects may be indexed under different category codes.

Descriptors

The Global Health database contains several descriptor fields. Four of the fields use controlled terms from the CAB Thesaurus, one uses non-thesaurus terms, and one uses alphanumeric descriptors (codes). For greater accuracy when using alphanumeric descriptors, use them in combination with other descriptors.

Related topics:

Go: Guide Index or Back

Alphanumeric Descriptors

Alphanumeric descriptors are entered in the CABICODES (CC) field and are subject classification codes which indicate the main subject areas covered by the record.

Text corresponding to the CABICODES is in the CABICODE Headings (Translations) (CD) field.

See CABICODES for a list of codes and headings.

Controlled Terms

The Global Health database uses a controlled vocabulary, called the CAB Thesaurus, to index each record in the file. For each item, appropriate descriptors are selected from the Thesaurus to reflect all major aspects of the paper. Global Health has four controlled descriptor fields:

* The BT field contains broad category indexing from the GE and OD fields.

For additional information on searching within the controlled descriptor fields, see the list below:

Go: Guide Index or Back

Assigning Broader Categories

Entries in the Geographic Headings (GE) and Organism Descriptors (OD) fields have broader category terms assigned to the Broad Terms (BT) field. To search at a specific level, use the GE and/or OD fields. For a general search, use the BT field.

For example, records dealing with England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland would be indexed with England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland in the GE field. These records would then all have UK assigned to the BT field. The search can therefore be as specific or as general as necessary. Where records are of relevance to the UK as a whole, UK would be indexed in the GE field. To ensure complete retrieval of all records about the UK (general and specific) be sure to qualify the search term with both BT and GE.

Go: Guide Index or Back

Common and Scientific Names

Farm animals and the most common crops are indexed under their common names. Other organisms are usually indexed under their scientific names. For comprehensive retrieval, always include scientific names as well as common names in your search.

Examples:
oryza in od or rice in de
plasmodium in od or malaria in de

Where both the common and scientific names of an organism appear in the Thesaurus, the scientific name will appear in the Organism Descriptors (OD) field, and the common name in the Descriptors (DE) field. However, if the Thesaurus preferred term for an organism is the common name, then this will appear in the OD field.

All organisms of importance to the paper are included in the Organism Descriptors (OD) field, if they are present in the Thesaurus. If they are not Thesaurus terms, they will appear in the Identifiers (ID) field.

Please note, however, that as the Thesaurus is updated regularly, terms used at present may not have been Thesaurus terms when used in older records. Therefore, older records may have current Thesaurus terms appearing in their ID field.

For additional information on searching within the controlled descriptor fields, see the list below:

Go: Guide Index or Back

Human Literature

For literature about humans as opposed to veterinary literature, etc., the preferred term is MAN.

Examples:
man in od
man n bt

Hyphenated Descriptors

The controlled vocabulary fields Descriptors (DE), Geographic Headings (GE), and Organism Descriptors (OD) contain single word terms terminated with a hyphen. This ensures that if a single word term is entered with a hyphen but no field is specified, such as "in OD" or "in SU", the only records retrieved will be those containing the precise single word term in the DE, GE, or OD field, and therefore will be records specifically about the term.

In the example sewage in de, the word sewage will be searched when it appears either as a single term or as part of a multi-word phrase such as sewage-effluent. To search for sewage when it appears as a single term a trailing hyphen should be used, for example sewage- in de.

Please note that WinSPIRS 4.01 does not support the use of trailing hyphens. If used, they will be ignored and the result will be as if the trailing hyphens have not been entered in the search string. For example, in WinSPIRS 4.01 nitrogen- in de retrieves nitrogen- in the Descriptors (DE) field as well as ammonium-nitrogen and nitrogen-fertilizers etc.

Although the Broad Terms (BT) field is a controlled descriptor field, containing only controlled vocabulary, it does not contain hyphenated single word terms.

The Identifiers (ID) field does not contain hyphenated single word terms because this field is not a controlled vocabulary field.

Multi-word descriptors may be searched either with or without the hyphen. For example, land-use in de retrieves only those records with this exact phrase in the DE field; however, land use in de retrieves from the DE field not only land-use, but also land-use-planning.

If the Title (TI) or Abstract (AB) fields, as examples, contain a hyphenated term such as south-eastern, searching south-eastern or south-eastern in ti, etc., including the hyphen, will retrieve this exact term with the hyphen; searching without the hyphen will retrieve the hyphenated as well as non-hyphenated occurrences and also variations such as eastern South as in the example eastern South Dakota, etc.

For additional information on searching within the controlled descriptor fields, see the list below:

Go: Guide Index or Back

Simultaneous Searching of Descriptors

To search in the Descriptors (DE), Organism Descriptors (OD) and Geographic Headings (GE) fields simultaneously, use the Subject Headings (SU) field.

Example:
(fodder and cattle and australia) in su

For additional information on searching within the controlled descriptor fields, see the list below:

Go: Guide Index or Back

Using Limit Fields

Limit fields, when combined with other search terms, are particularly useful for focusing or limiting a search. To search a limit field, use the in or = operators with the field abbreviation, such as 1988 in py or py=1988. Omitting the field label retrieves information from free text (non-limit) fields only.

When searching in the following limit fields, truncation may be used where appropriate. For example: pt=journal-*

For limit fields containing numeric data, you can also use other special operators:

Symbol Operation Performed Example
=
equal to py=1996
<
less than py<1993
>
greater than  py>1995
<=
less than or equal to py<=1994
>=
greater than or equal to py>=1995
-
within a range py=1992-1996

Sample Searches

The following are a few examples of the types of searches possible in the Global Health database. These are not meant to be exhaustive searches, but are illustrative of the types of information and indexing available on the database. For more information on search strategies or subject coverage, please contact CABI Publishing. Before trying any of these examples, clear your search history.

Example 1: Find information on Wuchereria bancrofti in Japan.

  1. Search for term wuchereria bancrofti in the Organism Descriptors (OD) field:
    wuchereria-bancrofti in od
  2. Search for Japan using the Geographic Headings (GE) field:
    japan in ge
  3. Combine the search concepts; you can use the search statement numbers rather than retyping all the searches:
    #3 and #5

Example 2: Find information on quinine and children. Limit the search to English-language articles published beginning in 1991.

  1. Search for English-language articles using the Language of Text (LA) field:
    nglish in la
  2. Search for the term quinine and children in the Descriptors (DE) field:
    (quinine and children) in de
  3. Combine the search concepts; you can use the search statement numbers rather than retyping all the searches:
    #1 and #4
  4. Limit the results to papers published beginning in 1991 using the Publication Year (PY)
field; beginning your search with an operator automatically combines it with the previous search:
    and py>=1991

Example 3: Find papers by M.R. McGinnis on mycoses but not on immunology.

  1. Search for McGinnis in the Author (AU) field. Truncation (*) may be used to retrieve the name with any initials to ensure retrieving all variations of the author's name. Note, however, that all authors named McGinnis will be retrieved:
    mcginnis-* in au
  2. Search for records containing mycoses in the Descriptors (DE) field but eliminate any records mentioning immunology, use truncation (*) to eliminate all forms of the term immunology:
mycoses in de not immunolo* in de
  3. Combine the search concepts; you can use the search statement numbers rather than retyping all the searches:
    #2 and #5

Example 4: Find papers on neoplasm which are not published in English.

  1. Search for the terms neoplasms in the Descriptors (DE) field:
    neoplasms in de
  2. Limit the results to foreign papers by excluding records with english in the Language of Text (LA) field; beginning your search with an operator automatically combines it with the previous search:
    not english in la

Special Characters

Greek letters and some symbols are spelled out in full, such as alpha, sigma, male, female, etc.

Some symbols and punctuation are unsearchable characters and are treated as if they are not there. Commas, colons, apostrophes, question marks, etc. appear in the record, but they are not searchable. Simply ignore them.
Example: 2,4,5-T should be searched as 245-t in de

Full stop (or period) should be ignored in text searching but included when searching for a number.

Example:
0.7 is searched 0.7
07 is searched 07

Slashes are also not searchable, but are treated as a space.
Example: mg/ml is searched mg ml

Please see Hyphenated Descriptors for more information on using hyphens.

Please note that WinSPIRS 4.01 does not support the use of trailing hyphens. If used they will be ignored and the result will be as if the trailing hyphens have not been entered in the search string. For example, in WinSPIRS 4.01, nitrogen- in de retrieves nitrogen- in the Descriptors (DE) field as well as ammonium-nitrogen and nitrogen-fertilizers etc.

In your search strategy, allow for all the possible variations of symbols and special characters.

Stopwords

Words of little intrinsic meaning that occur too frequently to be useful in searching text are known as "stopwords." You cannot search for the following stopwords by themselves, but you can include them within phrases:

an by or were
and from that which
are is the with
as more their
at of to
be on was

Thesaurus

The CAB Thesaurus is a controlled vocabulary that is used to index the following descriptor fields in this database:

The ondisc Thesaurus comprises two main sections: the List of Permuted Terms and the Term Details. The List of Permuted Terms is an alphabetical list of all the controlled vocabulary terms used to index records in the database.

The Term Details for a given term may contain Narrower terms, Related terms, Broader terms, Scope notes, and Used For notes. Use narrower terms to focus your search; use broader and related terms to broaden your search.

The Explode function on the Term Details screen searches for the main descriptor and all of the narrower descriptors below it.

Please note that the Thesaurus is updated regularly and any new terms added to it would previously have been entered in the Identifiers (ID) field. This should be taken into account for older records.

For more information, please contact CABI Publishing or visit http://www.cabthesaurus.info.

Using Indexes

Using the Free Text Index (General Index)

The Free Text Index (General Index in WebSPIRS) contains an alphabetical list of terms used to index the non-limit database fields. The Free Text Index allows you to look up, select, and search for variations of a term. It is particularly useful if you are uncertain of the spelling of a term or how the terms are used in the database. Since the Free Text Index shows terms used in indexing the database, searching directly from this index will always yield results. The Free Text Index includes the following fields:

Using Field-Specific Indexes

Field-specific indexes are available for some database fields. Each field-specific index contains an alphabetical list of the terms occurring in an individual field. As with the Free Text Index, this enables you to look up, select, and search for variations of terms in the database. The advantage of a field-specific index is that you know where the terms occur in the database.
