HAZC Hazchem Code

2y* in hazc

2se in hazc

This is one of the fields contained within the Occupational Exposure superfield (ZOCE) which itself is associated with the Occupational Exposure message field (OE).

Both searches above will find those codes where the second letter is either bracketed or not - see below. Multiple occurrences are separated with "; ".

The HAZCHEM code is a code used to instruct United Kingdom emergency services on equipment, evacuation and other methods of dealing with transportation incidents. It is administered by the Chemical Industries Association.

This emergency action code is required to be displayed on road tankers, tank wagons and tank containers carrying dangerous goods by the appropriate road and rail regulations which detail vehicular requirements for the carriage of dangerous goods.

The number in the first part of the code indicates the equipment suitable for fire fighting and, where appropriate, for dispersing spillages of dangerous goods as follows:

  "1" - water jets

"2" -water fog - in the absence of fog a fine spray must be used

  "3" - foam

"4" - dry agent - water must not be allowed to come into contact with the dangerous goods at risk.

The second part of the code is a letter which indicates the precautions to be taken in the event of a fire or spillage as shown below:

IF the letter is P, there IS danger of violent reaction or explosion; full protective clothing must be worn (a - see below) and the spillage must be diluted (b - see below).

IF the letter is R, there is NO danger of violent reaction or explosion; full protective clothing must be worn and the spillage must be diluted.

IF the letter is S, there IS danger of violent reaction or explosion; breathing apparatus (c - see below) must be worn and the spillage must be diluted.

IF the letter is [S] (d - see below), there IS danger of violent reaction or explosion; breathing apparatus (for fire only) must be worn and the spillage must be diluted.

IF the letter is T, there is NO danger of violent reaction or explosion; breathing apparatus must be worn and the spillage must be diluted.

IF the letter is [T], there is NO danger of violent reaction or explosion; breathing apparatus (for fire only) must be worn and the spillage must be diluted.

IF the letter is W, there IS danger of violent reaction or explosion; full protective clothing must be worn and the spillage must be contained (e - see below).

IF the letter is X, there is NO danger of violent reaction or explosion; full protective clothing must be worn and the spillage must be contained.

IF the letter is Y, there IS danger of violent reaction or explosion; breathing apparatus must be worn and the spillage must be contained.

IF the letter is [Y], there IS danger of violent reaction or explosion; breathing apparatus (for fire only) must be worn and the spillage must be contained.

IF the letter is Z, there is NO danger of violent reaction or explosion; breathing apparatus must be worn and the spillage must be contained.

IF the letter is [Z], there is NO danger of violent reaction or explosion; breathing apparatus (for fire only) must be worn and the spillage must be contained.

a). "Full protective clothing" includes breathing apparatus.

b). "Dilute" indicates that the dangerous goods may be washed down to a drain with a large quantity of water.

c). Where "breathing apparatus" is indicated protective gloves are appropriate.

d). A letter within square brackets is a substitute for reverse video, a data attribute which cannot be shown in SPIRS.

e). "Contain" indicates a need to avoid spillages from entering drains or water courses.

For certain dangerous goods, there is a letter "E" (the third part of the code) which indicates that evacuation of people from the neighbourhood of an accident should be considered. Sometimes, the data additionally contains information pertaining to the physical form of the substance.
