irreversible effects in rsk

This is one of the fields contained within the Occupational Exposure superfield (ZOCE) which itself is associated with the Occupational Exposure message field (OE).

You can either use the risk phrase codes or (part of) the text to which they refer when searching in this field. When searching for combination phrases, use a space instead of the "/" character.

Risk and safety phrases used in connection with DOSE items are approved phrases for describing the risks involved in the use of hazardous chemicals and have validity in the United Kingdom and throughout the countries of the EC (European Community). The approved texts have designated R (Risk) and S (Safety) numbers from which it is possible to provide translations for all approved languages adopted by the European Community. The risk and safety phrases quoted in DOSE relate to the Approved Supply List (Guide): information approved for the classification and labelling of substances and preparations dangerous for supply [Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging) (CHIP) Regulations, 1993, Statutory Instrument No. 1746, amended by No. 3050] HSC (Health and Safety Commission), UK. The risk and safety phrases should be used to describe the hazards of chemicals on data sheets for use and supply; for labelling of containers, storage drums, tanks, etc., and for labelling of articles specified as dangerous for conveyance by road. The following risk phrases, relating to ecotoxicological and environmental risks, are included in CHIP1, but no assignments are made to individual chemicals:

R50 - Very toxic to aquatic organisms

R51 - Toxic to aquatic organisms

R52 - Harmful to aquatic organisms

R53 - May cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment

R54 - Toxic to flora

R55 - Toxic to fauna

R56 - Toxic to soil organisms

R57 - Toxic to bees

R58 - May cause long-term adverse effects in the environment

R59 - Dangerous for the ozone layer.

Manufacturers/users may assign such phrases themselves using the criteria given in the Approved Guide given above - Guidance on regulations, HSC, UK specifies the criteria necessary for assigning a particular R or S phrase to a substance which has not been assigned any phrases.

Under Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations, known as CHIP2, which came into force in January 1995, R47 was deleted and replaced by the following phrases that relate to reproductive hazards:

R60 - May impair fertility

R61 - May cause harm to the unborn child

R62 - Possible risk of impaired fertility

R63 - Possible risk of harm to the unborn child

R64 - May cause harm to breastfed babies

The following safety phrases are also included in CHIP2:

S56 - Dispose of this material and its container to hazardous or special waste collection point

S57 - Use appropriate containment to avoid environmental contamination

S59 - Refer to manufacturer/supplier for information on recovery/recycling

S60 - This material and its container must be disposed of as hazardous waste

S61 - Avoid release to the environment. Refer to special instructions/Safety data sheet

S62 - If swallowed, do not induce vomiting: seek medical advice immediately and show this container or label

Under the CHIP96 (Amendment) Regulations the Approved Supply List was updated and a new labelling phrase introduced - Restricted to Professional Users.

CHIP97 (Amendment) Regulations provided new and revised entries to the Approved Supply List, and new criteria for the classification and labelling of sensitisers (i.e. for the use of R37, R42, and R43). The following new risk phrase is included:

R65 - Harmful: may cause lung damage if swallowed.

CHIP99 (Amendment 1) and (Amendment 2) Regulations provided new and revised entries to the Approved Supply List.
