This is one of the fields contained within the Occupational Exposure superfield (ZOCE) which itself is associated with the Occupational Exposure message field (OE).

This field - when it occurs - contains one or more of the following phrases in nearly every case (the corresponding code appears in brackets):

 - Explosive (E)

 - Oxidising (O)

 - Extremely flammable (F+)

 - Highly flammable (F)

 - Flammable (F)

 - Very toxic (T+)

 - Toxic (T)

 - Harmful (Xn)

 - Corrosive (C)

 - Irritant (Xi).

 - Dangerous for the Environment (N)

These retrievable phrases and codes are present as graphic hotlinks. Clicking on such a hotlink (WinSPIRS only; for WebSPIRS please refer to the comments in the Chemical Structure field description) will reveal the associated official graphic symbol of danger (with an orange background). Such images include the code as the title of the graphic and the phrase as the caption. Please note that the '+' character is not retrievable. In these cases use the phrase for searching. The fourth example above will find all those substances classified as toxic but NOT very toxic.

The information presented for the supply of substances is derived from the Approved Supply List: information approved for the classification and labelling of substances and preparations dangerous for supply [Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging) (CHIP) Regulations, 1993, Statutory Instrument No. 1746, amended by No. 3050] HSC (Health and Safety Commission), UK. Since January 1995 the supply labelling requirements have been regularly updated and are now provided in accordance with the CHIP99 (Amendment 2) regulations.
