SilverPlatter Guides ST Chemical Structure
hcc* in st ch3cho in st ch3 2c oh cn in st graphic in st
This is one of the fields contained within the Substance Identifiers and Basic Chemistry superfield (ZID) which itself is associated with the Substance Identifiers and Basic Chemistry message field (ID).
The ST field will either contain a hotlink to a graphic representation of the chemical structure or, if the structure can be simply and unambiguously described by textual data, a character string. It occurs in most DOSE records. Remember to substitute a space for bracket characters - see the section on character set and indexing for more information. The third search given above actually retrieves (CH3)2C(OH)CN (acetone cyanohydrin). The first search given above looks for simple or substituted alkynes. For addition compounds, salts and other substances that include a full-stop in the simple structure, a space has been inserted before the full-stop to make both parts of the structure searchable. For example, guanidine hydrochloride is represented as H2NC(=NH)NH2 .HCl so that HCl becomes searchable as a separate entity.
Graphics can only be viewed on certain SPIRS platforms (e.g. WinSPIRS).
The following remarks apply to WinSPIRS. Click anywhere within the underlined phrase (which is "See graphic") and an image of the chemical structure will appear. The title of the image will be the CAS number whereas the caption will be the name of the chemical. Please refer to the general Help Index for more information about handling graphic images in WinSPIRS.
To see the graphic images in WebSPIRS, you may need to configure a TIFF file viewer for your chosen browser as none is currently shipped with the WebSPIRS software.
N.B. In WinSPIRS (which includes functionality to display graphic images inline with the text) some structures may not display properly inline if you have this option set (horizontal and/or vertical lines may not be visible). This is due to the very small size of a heavily compressed image that has to be displayed inline. You should always check by clicking on "See graphic" (see above) to view the image in a dedicated window.
