The SC field contains a textual subject description as well as a numeric code, selected from a list of standard terms, that reflect the content of the original document. The text description will limit your search to a broad subject category; the numeric code will narrow your search to a more specific classification within that broad subject category. The most specific portion of the textual subject description for the numeric code appears in the Descriptors (DE) field.

For example, the textual subject description, "ECOLOGICAL-ABSTRACTS: ECONOMIC-ECOLOGY," is the broad subject category appearing in the SC field. The numeric code following this description, (73-9-1), represents the more specific classification of "agriculture" within that broad subject category. The textual subject description "agriculture" appears in the Descriptors (DE) field.

Records prior to 1997, the SC field contains a one-digit code, and its text equivalent, for each of the categories into which GEOBASE was divided. The database was divided into three broad subject groups and a fourth group for items that had not appeared in the Geo Abstracts journals.
