Descriptors are controlled vocabulary terms or subject headings from the "Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors," used to group documents on similar topics.

Major Descriptors (DEM) denote primary topics and are preceded by an asterisk in displayed records; Minor Descriptors (DER) denote secondary topics. Although you can search with the DEM and DER field abbreviations, all Descriptors display with the DE field label. Searching with the DE field label searches for both Major and Minor Descriptors.

For most precise results, search Descriptors as hyphenated, "bound" phrases. Hyphenate single-word Descriptors, such as dyslexia- in de, to limit the search to the single-word Descriptor.
