Identifiers retrieve highly specific subjects dealt with by a document. Major Identifiers (IDM) denote primary topics and are preceded by an asterisk in displayed records; Minor Identifiers (IDR) denote secondary topics. Although you can search with the IDM and IDR field abbreviations, all Identifiers display with the ID field label. Searching with the ID field label searches for both Major and Minor Identifiers.

For most precise results, search Identifiers as hyphenated, "bound" phrases. Hyphenate single-word Identifiers, such as orthography- in id, to limit the search to the single-word Identifier.
