SilverPlatter Guides Search Example: Word Variants
Searching with truncation lets you retrieve records containing variations of your term. For example, let's search for journal articles about dyslexia in childhood.
1. First conduct a search for the phrase dyslex*. The asterisk (truncation symbol) retrieves records containing any word beginning with dyslex, such as dyslexia or dyslexic.
2. Next search for and child*. Again, the asterisk searches for all terms beginning with the root child, such as child, children, childhood, etc. Beginning a search statement with an operator (and) automatically combines the results with your previous search statement.
3. Finally, search for and ej in fi. This limits the search to records containing EJ in the Source File (FI) field, indicating the ERIC Journal file (the Current Index to Journals in Education--CIJE file).
