GS Gene Symbol

The GS field contains the symbol or abbreviated form of gene names as reported in the literature. Special codes indicate super- and subscripted information and Greek letters that appear in the gene symbol. For most efficient searching of gene symbols with superscripts or subscripts, select the complete gene symbol while displaying records, or browse available gene symbols in the Gene Symbol Field-Specific Index described below. The GS field is available only in citations indexed through 1995.

Superscripts and Subscripts

The term "down" enclosed in the less than (<) and greater than (>) symbols surrounds any subscripted portions of a gene symbol; the term "up" enclosed in the less than (<) and greater than (>) symbols surrounds any superscripted portions of a gene symbol

Greek characters are indicated by an alphabetic code to indicate the appropriate upper- or lower-case Greek letter followed by gr. For example, Kgr indicates the upper case kappa. The following are the complete alphabetic codes for each Greek letter:
