SilverPlatter Guides SH Subheadings (a limit field)
prevention-and-control in sh sh=prevention-and-control
The SH field contains the qualifier associated with the main MeSH Descriptors of each record. Subheadings, assigned by NLM indexers, describe frequently discussed aspects of a subject. Examples of subheadings include terms such as diagnosis, drug effects, and therapy.
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) does not allow all subheadings to be used with all main headings. However, you can use the SH field to combine a subheading with a main heading, even if the combination is not indexed as such by the NLM. For example, to find records about the preventive aspects of handwashing, you could search for handwashing and prevention-and-control in sh, even though "Prevention & Control" is not an indexed subheading of "Handwashing".
You can also search for a subheading by itself. For example, to find out about the physical effects of the drug "amrinone", search for the drug name in combination with the appropriate subheading: amrinone and drug-effects in sh. SPIRS will retrieve records with occurrences of "amrinone" in any free text field and the subheading "Drug-Effects" in the SH field. Search for multiple-word subheadings as hyphenated, "bound" phrases as shown in the examples.
Browsing Subheadings As an alternative to searching with the field label, you can browse all available MeSH subheadings and search for them directly from the Subheadings Field-Specific Index. This field-specific index contains only subheadings used in the database. Results of a search in this index display in the SH field.
