Combining Searches

Beginning a search statement with an operator (and, not, or, with, near, or in) automatically combines that statement with the previous one. For instance, if the search you just completed is Canadian, searching for and literature will yield the same results as the search for Canadian and literature.

For efficient searching, use the most appropriate operator for your search:

OR

ethnicity or culture

Retrieves records that contain either "ethnicity," "culture," or both.

AND

ethnicity and culture

Retrieves records that contain both "ethnicity" and "culture."

WITH

ethnicity with culture

Retrieves records that contain both "ethnicity" and "culture" in the same field.

NEAR

ethnicity near culture

Retrieves records that contain both "ethnicity" and "culture" in the same sentence.

NOT

ethnicity not gender

Retrieves records that contain "ethnicity" but not "gender."

IN

ethnicity in ti

Retrieves records that contain "ethnicity" in the TI (Title) field.
