Ovid Technologies, Inc.2002 CANCERLIT Update News |
CANCERLIT has been reloaded for 2002. Changes include: eight new fields; one changed field; 847 descriptors added, representing concepts with no directly corresponding descriptors in 2001 MeSH (for example, new concepts and records); 185 descriptors replaced with more up-to-date terminology; 47 descriptors deleted; and 2041 see references (print entry terms) added.
The new MeSH heading Nanotechnology has been added for 2002; it is not reflected in the published Annotated Alphabetic MeSH. This new heading has two tree numbers, H01.603 and J01.897.524.
Heading Changes
The following changes were made to 2002 MeSH since the time the MeSH database
and printed publication was first made available: change in tree number for
Albania to Z01.542.248.020, and the deleted heading Herbs has been replaced
by the heading Angiosperms, not replaced by Phytotherapy as published in the
Annotated Alphabetic MeSH.
Viruses
All viruses were reviewed and updated to conform with the 7th Report of
the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV). The most significant
change is its official approval of the concept of viral species and the codification
of the official form of virus species names using the format of first letter of first
word capitalized, first letter of other words all lower case.
In line with the Report, many new virus names have been added to MeSH and older terminology has been changed. Among the significant changes, the names of all the genera in the family Retroviridae have been revised. Most species and strains of HTLV viruses (now under Deltaretrovirus) have been reorganized and specific coxsackie viruses are now referred to as specific enteroviruses.
Complementary and Alternative Medicine
The terminology related to complementary and alternative medicine has been re-structured
into sub-groups in order to facilitate searching those divisions. The field can most
broadly be divided into physical, sensory, mind-body and spiritual, plus some which occur
in more than one category. Physical includes acupuncture, musculoskeletal manipulations
done by professionals; sensory includes play-, dance-, sound-, color- and other such
therapies; mind-body includes biofeedback, breathing, hypnosis, laughter, relaxation;
spiritual includes faith, magic, occultism, and witchcraft. Unclassified includes
homeopathy, phytotherapy, and natural childbirth.
Plants and Phytotherapy
Terminology related to plant family and genera headings have been greatly expanded with
more use of the scientific Latin binomial nomenclature and less use of common names as
preferred terminology. In addition, indexing of studies involving plants for therapy are
now being coordinated with Phytotherapy and the most specific plant (family, genus or
species) in B6 that is available. Because of the importance of what part of the plant is
being used, coordinate indexing uses specific Plant Components (B06.413).
Bioethics
Through joint effort with the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, enlargement and enhancement
of terminology in the area of bioethics has been added. This cooperative project is in
preparation for the addition into PubMed of the journal citations, which formerly
constituted the BIOETHICSLINE database. Some 50 new descriptors have been created and
numerous other changes have been made in MeSH.
Transport and Carrier Proteins
There are 50 new categories of transport proteins under Membrane Transport Proteins. Also,
34 headings that were formerly under Carrier Proteins, Membrane Proteins or Permeases are
now arrayed under Membrane Transport Proteins. Many of the 2,018 Supplementary Concept
Records (SCRs) that formerly were mapped to Carrier Proteins are now mapped to specific
categories listed under membrane transport proteins. Several non-mammalian organism-specific
protein classes have been added to accommodate the increasing need for indexing of proteins
from model organisms. Many of the organism-specific SCR proteins are now more clearly
distinguished with organism names and heading maps to these protein classes. The High
Mobility Group (HMG) proteins have been organized according to new nomenclature guidelines,
which were published in: Trends Biochem Sci. 2001 Mar;26(3):152-3. The new rules were
established with the coordinated efforts of staff from MeSH, NCBI and scientists working in
the field of HMG protein research.
Urtica Diocia
Urtica Diocia is misspelled in the CANCERLIT tree as well as the input data.
If you need to search for this term, use "Urtica Dioica" in the search.
Periodic Updates to Tree
Although NLM updates their tree on a weekly basis, Ovid will not be doing this.
As a result of this change, some terms are not included in Ovid's version of
the tree. The new terms that are added weekly are searchable in Ovid's CANCERLIT,
but do not display in the record. Nanotechnology is one of the terms that is
not included in the tree with the reload. You can search for the term, but it
does not display.
New Publication Type - Patient Education Handout
Some clinical journals have begun adding "patient pages" that relate to substantive
articles. The "patient pages" are designed for physicians to share with their patients or
to use as talking points with patients. Many searchers expressed interest in being able
to restrict to this type of article. The new publication type Patient Education Handout
allows users to limit this way.
Citation Subset Values Added to CANCERLIT Records
Citation subset values E, Q, S, and X have been added to the CANCERLIT records which
had been included in the former AIDSLINE, BIOETHICSLINE, HISTLINE and SPACELINE
databases. Searchers should note that citation subset values are multiply occurring,
which means that individual citations may be included in several subsets.
ED Entry Date [Phrase Indexed] 20011215.ed. 20000929.ed. The Entry Date (ED) field contains the issue (year, month and day) in which a document appeared in Index Medicus. This index contains the Revision Date (RD) of the document, if present, and appears in the format YYYYMMDD. This field also displays in the Update Date (UP) field, which is the date the record was added to Ovid's Medline. IA Investigator Affiliation [Word Indexed] seattle.ia. The Investigator Affiliation (IA) field contains the affiliation of the investigator of the article, and displays as part of the Institution (IN) field. IR Investigator [Phrase Indexed] curtin sb.ir. The Investigator (IR) field appears in citations created or maintained by the National Aeronautics and Space Adminiatration (NASA). The format for investigator is last name followed by one or more initials: Smith JC or Smith J. It displays as part of the author (AU) field. MI MEDLINE Identifier [Phrase Indexed] 20000004.mi. 67179603.mi. The MEDLINE Identifier (MI) field contains the NLM Class Maintenance number. This number was formerly the Unique Identifier (UI). NT General Note [Display Only] The General Note (NT) field contains either a series name and number or general supplementary information about an item. The notes may include information on the availability of a bibliography, ordering information for dissertations or hearings, or general summaries of materials such as manuals or scripts. A series title may appear for a book or for audiovisual materials. OA Other Abstract [Phrase Indexed] crime.oa. The Other Abstract (OA) field contains a brief abstract written by staff members of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics. The Other Abstract (OA) field is indexed in the Abstract (AB) field, and contains all searchable words from the other abstract. RD Revision Date [Phrase Indexed] 20011126.rd. The Revision Date (RD) field contains the most recent date of revision in the YYYYMMDD format. It is indexed in the Entry Date (ED) field. SM Space Flight Mission [Phrase Indexed] Galileo project.sm. The Space Flight Mission (SM) field contains descriptive values for each Space Flight Mission.
