How Ovid’s COUNTER Compliance Impacts Usage Reporting

Ovid’s goal is to deliver the highest quality content, tools, and services to our customers.  As part of that goal we have taken the required steps to become COUNTER compliant and, simultaneously, improved our user statistics administrative tools. These changes will impact the usage reports that you routinely create and review. This email outlines the changes and improvements. In January 2008, we released OvidSP WebStats, a new and improved statistics user interface that is part of an ongoing series of enhancements to the OvidSP platform.

OvidSP WebStats usage reports now conform to the industry’s highest quality standard for online usage statistics, set forth by the non-profit COUNTER organization. To learn more about the COUNTER organization and its standards click here. Ovid is a COUNTER member. 

You may notice some differences in reports generated from the OvidSP WebStats tool and those generated from the tool used for Ovid Web Gateway stats reporting. Some of these changes reflect the COUNTER compliance rules. For example, in the past Ovid counted “clicks” each time a user clicked on content. COUNTER compliance requires us to consider multiple clicks within 10 seconds as one click. 

We will continue to improve usage reporting in the upcoming months. Until all usage reports (including non-COUNTER reports) are available through the new OvidSP WebStats interface we will continue to allow access and reporting in both administrative systems.
