Z39.50 Database Parameters
SilverPlatter's Z39.50 Gateway provides precision searching and full database content in the context of standard Bib-1 attributes and MARC21 records. Simple searches and basic record display can be done in a completely database-independent way using basic attributes like Title, Author, ISSN, etc. and generic MARC field names. Results comparable with SilverPlatter's interfaces can only be achieved with database specific configuration. Most of the relevant information is available through the Gateway's Explain database. But since very few clients support Explain, we provide these pages to support manual client configuration.
The individual tables linked to from the table of contents below describe Search, Scan and Present behaviour. Each table describes all of the fields in the subject database. The columns are:
Short field name - the name by which the field is searched in SilverPlatter's interfaces.
Long field name - a descriptive name for the field. We apologize for not providing long field names for all the databases, we are currently working on being able to provide detailed information for all of the databases.
Bib-1 USE attribute - the USE attribute(s) that search this field. Their may be more than one, and a given USE attribute may search more than one field. (This information is based on the standard contents of erlzbib1.cfg. Site administrators can customise erlzbib1.cfg, so this may not apply at your site).
Scanable - Indicates whether the USE attribute accesses an appropriate index with Scan. This is controlled by two things: settings in erlzbib1.cfg and the way the database is constructed. An appropriate index is available only if both (1) the provided USE attribute maps to exactly one field in the relevant database and (2) that field is either a limit field or has a field specific index.
MARC field - the field and subfield that the field contents appear in. This is mainly self explanatory. Some SilverPlatter fields (for example AU) can contain more than one value. In this case, the MARC field may be annotated as follows:
Repeats means that all of the values appear, in repeated instances of the indicated field. Repeats starting with item N means that the values appear as above, but starting with the Nth item in the list. Item N only means that only the Nth item from the list appears in the indicated field.
For example the AU field is normally returned in MARC fields 100 (the first author) and 700 (all other authors).
