THIRTY YEARS AFTER THE National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Conference on early identification of hearing loss, almost 98 percent of newborns in the United States are screened for hearing loss at birth. However, many infants who do not pass their newborn hearing screening do not complete the recommended early hearing detection and intervention process. To reduce barriers to diagnosis and intervention will require innovations in the care pathway. The Callier Center for Communication Disorders implemented in-house 3D earmold manufacturing as an innovative approach to reduce the delay in provision of amplification services for infants diagnosed with hearing loss.
