Automation of measurements on and control of an electron synchrotron is discussed. The history of the development and brief description of the accelerator are presented; the computer monitoring and control are discussed in detail; the basic devices forming the interface between the computer and physical sensors and the control systems are listed. The design is based on the concept of a flexible user interface, making it possible to separate the program development stages and the automation stage itself. This concept is relatively weakly tied to a specific object of control and therefore it is applicable to a wide class of physical systems.
