The concept of a single consultant surgeon running two concurrent operating lists is a contentious one. This model has almost completely disappeared in the NHS. Many people feel that supervision, training and quality of patient care is negatively affected and consider this an outdated model in modern practice. During the 70s and 80s it was not uncommon in the UK for a consultant surgeon to operate in one theatre with his senior registrar operating in the adjacent theatre, allowing increased volume of work to be undertaken.
