Throughout 2012 we are running a series of articles examining the lives of people, both famous and infamous, who have made a historical contribution to surgery. This month, Louise King, Archivist at the RCS, looks at Frederick Treves.

Sir Frederick Treves is best remembered today for taking care of Joseph Merrick, the ‘Elephant Man’. In his lifetime, though, he was justly famous as an author of medical and travel memoirs, and as a consultant to high-status patients.
