This article discusses applications of attachment theory and theories of bereavement to the treatment of trauma with loss of the mother in young children. The article suggests guidelines that may be useful in clinical work with these difficult cases. Clinical application of the guidelines is illustrated by discussion of the therapeutic work with a 3-year-old boy who at the age of 21/2years survived an automobile accident in which his mother died.
