Surgery for the correction of ear deformities was first recorded in 1848 when Dieffenbach described techniques for repairing microtic and traumatized ears. However, surgery for the prominent ear was first mentioned in 1881 when Ely outlined his technique of a full thickness wedge excision of the auricle. In 1910 Lucket recorded the absence of a well-defined anti-helical fold in prominent ears. Since then there have been many descriptions of techniques of otoplasty of varying complexity.
