Cefepime

a new cephalosporin for parenteral treatment of serious infections

Drugs & Therapy Perspectives 4(3):p 4-7, August 1994.

IN BRIEF

Cefepime is a ‘fourth-generation’ parenteral cephalosporin that is effective in a variety of serious infections, particularly those caused by Gram-negative organisms.

Comparative studies have shown that it is generally as effective as ceftazidime or cefotaxime. Moreover, cefepime has proven at least as effective as combinations of gentamicin and an antipseudomonal penicillin in febrile neutropenic patients.

A potential advantage of cefepime is twice-daily administration for most indications. This may translate into economic advantages when cefepime is compared with some other parenteral cephalosporins.

Comparisons with agents such as imipenem/cilastatin or oral ciprofloxacin will be required to fully establish the place in therapy of cefepime.
