By the time this series of reviews is published (usually a two-month gap), we will have a new government: it will either be a Conservative government committed to swingeing cuts, or a resurgent Labour government let in faute de mieux. Either option is deeply unappealing.

Can we take solace in our professional journals? Up to a point, I think. I love the series of essays in the British Journal of General Practice about preferred cuts – particularly cutting any post that has the words ‘Czar’, ‘Co-ordinator’, ‘Champion’ or ‘Adviser’ in its title. Thank you, Dougal Jeffries, for lightening my day!
