Myopic astigmatism is a type of refractive error in which the eye has both myopia and astigmatism. Myopia occurs when the eye is longer than normal or the cornea is too steep, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. Astigmatism occurs when the cornea or lens of the eye is irregularly shaped, causing light to be focused unevenly on the retina, resulting in distorted or blurred vision.
In myopic astigmatism, both of these conditions are present, causing a person to have difficulty seeing objects both up close and at a distance. This can result in blurred vision, eye strain, headaches, and difficulty with depth perception. Treatment options for myopic astigmatism may include corrective lenses, such as glasses or contact lenses, or refractive surgery, such as LASIK or PRK.
