The angiotensin II receptor antagonists [sartans] are a very potent class of antihypertensive agents with a tolerability profile that is increasingly being referred to as 'placebo-like'. Now they are being combined with the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide and the latest data on the use of candesartan cilexetil/hydrochlorothiazide was presented at the 3rd International Symposium on Angiotensin II Antagonism [London, UK; February-March 2000]. For example, a study showed that candesartan cilexetil in combination with hydrochlorothiazide appears to be more effective than losartan/hydrochlorothiazide in lowering BP.
