Once-daily treatment with OROS methylphenidate [Concerta] is more effective than atomoxetine [Strattera] in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), according to the results of a large study presented at the 158th Annual Meeting of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) [Atlanta, Georgia, US; May 2005]. Compared with atomoxetine, OROS methylphenidate was associated with significantly greater improvements in symptoms and response rates in all children; notably, the benefit with OROS methylphenidate was also observed in girls. In two other studies presented at the meeting, OROS methylphenidate was superior to placebo in adolescents and adults with ADHD.
