Over the past 2 decades there has been an upsurge in the availability of pharmacological agents for the treatment of epilepsy. Despite this, there is still no fully effective anticonvulsant agent. At the 53rd Annual Meeting of the American Epilepsy Society [Orlando, US; December 1999] there were a number of sessions dedicated to compounds that are currently being developed for various types of seizures.
