Solifenacin succinate [Vesicare] provides a rapid and effective treatment for urgency, the core symptom of overactive bladder (OAB), according to results of the SUNRISE study presented at the 21st Congress of the European Association of Urology (EAU) [Paris, France; April 2006]. The multinational study was conducted in nearly 1000 patients, and showed that urgency episodes graded 3 or 4 on the Patients Perception of Intensity of Urgency Scale (PPIUS) were significantly reduced in patients treated with solifenacin, compared with placebo recipients. An analysis of the STAR study demonstrated that, in patients with more severe OAB symptoms at baseline, treatment satisfaction was enhanced by a dosage increase, thereby emphasizing the clinically important benefits of a flexible rather than fixed dosing regimen.
