The novel, patented formulation of 1.2% clindamycin and crystalline 0.025% tretinoin aqueous gel [Ziana Gel] is an effective topical treatment for acne vulgaris, according to data from three phase III trials presented at the 65th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) [Washington, District of Columbia, US; February 2007]. The studies, conducted in more than 4500 patients in total, showed that clindamycin/tretinoin was effective in reducing inflammatory, non-inflammatory, and total lesions after 12 weeks of therapy; the newly approved fixed combination product provided significantly greater efficacy against acne vulgaris, compared with either clindamycin or tretinoin alone.
