Background

There are many international organisations dedicated to improving childbirth related outcomes; however, it is important to focus beyond maternal and fetal mortality rates as the importance of human rights is becoming more evident in the literature. Many human rights issues are faced by women internationally, with women experiencing disrespect and abuse in maternity care on a global scale. This paper, the first of two, will review the literature surrounding this significant topic which will form the background to the subsequent paper exploring women's experiences of maternity care in Ireland. The particular focus will be from a human rights perspective.
