MIDIRS Midwifery Digest 29(4):p 467-473, 2019.
Normality of birth has been greatly impacted by different medical interventions and strict trust policies since the 1970s. Within this article, three normal birth strategies (NBS) will be explored in relation to supporting and caring for women undergoing vaginal birth after caesarean section (VBAC), who require complex care. The significance of these NBS for practising midwives is to advocate for and promote normality of birth among women who may experience or are considering VBAC, within trusts. The values and roles of midwives, in collaboration with other multidisciplinary teams (MDT), in providing a safe, ethical and woman-centred maternity service for women's best outcomes and experiences will be discussed.
