Recently the term ‘open disclosure’ was highlighted relating specifically to maternity services in Ireland. Deirdre Munro, Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) midwifery education officer, explores the topic of ‘open disclosure’, also known as ‘being open’. This article is a result of scoping this topic. It provides a basic overview of what open disclosure is. This could not have occurred without the invaluable assistance of Angela Tysall, Irish Health Service Executive (HSE) project lead on ‘open disclosure’, and Noreen O'Regan, quality nurse manager.
