Financial literacy, or the knowledge and skills contributing to informed and effective decisions of managing personal money, should be viewed as a subset of health literacy. To initiate nurses on the path from novice to expert, mastery of the health savings account is explored. Educating patients about financial literacy may benefit from nurses' approach to educate patients about medication literacy. Nurses should be empowered to employ financial literacy supporting self-care, share financial literacy with patients, and act as ambassadors of financial literacy to the public.
