Abstract Nurses need to know how to measure body temperature accurately and reliably, as readings are a vital part of a holistic patient assessment and can inform treatment decisions. This article outlines the rationale for recording body temperature and describes the procedure for measuring temperature using a tympanic thermometer, which is frequently used in clinical practice.
