The most appropriate methodology for conducting pharmacoeconomic analyses of pharmaceuticals is receiving considerable attention at present in the US. Indeed, there has been a surge in the amount of pharmacoeconomic information provided by the pharmaceutical industry. Essentially, pharmacoeconomic analyses and health outcomes research are conducted to assist formularies and health plans in the decision-making process. However, few studies to date have examined the relevance of pharmacoeconomic information to decision makers. Several studies seeking to better understand the significance of pharmacoeconomic information in the decision-making process were presented at the 5th Annual International Meeting of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research [Arlington, Virginia, US; May 2000].
