Meta-analysis: a case of the baby and the bathwater?

Meta-analyses are, currently, one of the most popular statistical methods to accurately quantify the extent of a treatment's benefits - especially when any difference might be relatively small or the cost of a prospective study is prohibitive. As pressures to justify pricing strategies and quantify a drug's economic benefits grow worldwide, meta-analyses increasingly form the foundation of health economic evaluations.
