Dr. phil. (1961), and post-doctorate qualification (1969) as Professor for History of German Literature, Ludwig-Maximilians University, Munich. Taught at the universities of Trier, Munich, Indiana and Frankfurt am Main. Vice-president of the Ludwig-Maximilians University, 1989–91; President of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Bonn, 1992–97; President of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, since 1999. Honorary degrees from the universities of Bristol, Dublin, Jerusalem and Münster. Member of the academies of arts and sciences in Göttingen, Düsseldorf, Berlin and Turin, and of the Academia Europaea, London.
