Reviews the book “Epidemiology of Sleep: Age, Gender, and Ethnicity” by K. L. Lichstein, et al. (2004; see record 2004-16236-000) which sets out to provide a systematic and unbiased evaluation to answer questions about how people sleep. The book is a detailed account of the methodology employed and results obtained in a comprehensive survey of sleep patterns of people living in the Memphis, TN, area. The reviewers conclude that, although the book does not present striking new findings, it does contribute a unique database for self-assessment of sleep, serves as a solid review of the epidemiology of sleep, and thoroughly discusses the difficult methodological issues inherent in population studies of sleep and sleep disorders.
