Description

First developed in 1988, Maternity and Infant Care is a bibliographic database of more than 270,000 references covering over 400 English-language journals and other sources. It is a key information resource used by maternity health care professionals and student midwives worldwide to support their research, practice and study requirements.

Compiled by MIDIRS (Midwives Information and Resource Service), Maternity and Infant Care draws together references from journal articles, book chapters, reports, pamphlets, news items, audio visual materials, conference proceedings and other ‘grey literature’ relating to the midwifery profession, pregnancy, labor, birth, postnatal care, infant feeding, neonatal care up until two years of age, and the transition to parenthood.

The database also includes details of correspondence and commentary written in response to an article. Many of the records are assigned to one or more of 570 standard searches on key topics in order to provide fast retrieval, using either a code or a browsable index of topics.

Key topics include:
- Antenatal health issues
- Childbirth education
- Complementary therapies
- Employment issues
- Ethical and professional issues
- Health care professional’s role
- Health education
- HIV
- Hospital policies
- Infant feeding
- International midwifery
- Intensive care
- Neonatal care
- Screening
- Social and psychological aspects
- Sudden infant death and infant mortality
