The Audiology: Clinical Education Network: A Streamlined Approach to Externships

Kaylee J. Smith, AuD, is an audiologist at Henry Ford Health, where she serves as the extern and balance coordinator, and an academic and clinical instructor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan.
Erin L. Miller, AuD, is a professor of instruction at the University of Akron and serves as the Clinical Education Coordinator for the Northeast Ohio AuD Consortium. She is a past president of the American Academy of Audiology and is actively involved in advocacy efforts at the state and national levels.
Ian M. Windmill, PhD, is a past president of the American Academy of Audiology, past chair of the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education, and a founding member of the Audiology Clinical Education Network. He has served on the faculty at the University of Louisville, University of Mississippi Medical Center, and the University of Cincinnati and as Director of Audiology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

With externships accounting for one-fourth or one-third of an audiology student’s education, it is important students make the right choice of an externship site. The Audiology Clinical Education Network is a collaborative effort among externship sites to give students a standardized process to interview, apply, and accept offers—resulting in more informed decisions for the student, their academic program, and the externship site.
